The Entitlement Cure Book Review and Giveaway

Sharing is caring!

We live in a culture of entitlement- and it starts very young. From every sport playing child receiving a participation trophy to many child sports no longer keeping score.

Raising a generation of children who don’t know how to lose is a scary thing.
Working hard toward a goal is something I want my children to learn from a young age. Entitlement leads to a poor work ethic, giving up because the road is difficult, and a self-centered life. So many adults believe that life should be easy and good things should just fall at their feet. The Entitlement Cure

Dr. John Townsend’s new book The Entitlement Cure: Finding Success in Doing Hard Things the Right Way addresses the entitlement mentality in our country. Dr. Townsend teaches how personal responsibility and doing the hard thing is the cure for that mentality. This book is written for those struggling with entitlement and also those who are affected by another’s entitlement mentality. Dr Townsend’s solution to entitlement is the hard way- “the habit of doing what is best, rather than what is comfortable, to achieve a worthwhile outcome.”The Entitlement Cure

While this book was written towards helping the entitled person, Dr. Townsend writes that all of us have pocket entitlement to address. Pocket entitlement comes when we feel like we deserve something- whether it’s as big as a promotion at work, or a small as a better deal at the grocery store. I know I felt convicted about several of my own attitudes while reading the book!

I’m a Mom who wants to teach her children about doing life the hard way- that’s why I wanted to read this book. I want my children to have wonderful, successful lives. I don’t want them to believe they should get good grades without studying, have a great career without doing their best, or have a loving family without working to be part of a team. I want to teach them to dream and set goals, and then to follow through with the hard work it takes to get there.

The chapter on the causes of entitlement was reason enough for me, as a Mom, to read this book. Not only does it point out what causes entitlement, but it also gives alternatives. (Each chapter ends with skills to put the chapter’s information into practice.) For example, rather than praising a child for something she has no control over, such as beauty, praise her for something that takes effort, such as completing school work or being kind to a friend.

Dr Townsend teaches how hard work and doing the right thing might be the hard road, but it is also the road to true happiness and success. Not only will you be more equipped to take that hard road, you will also be ready to help others find the value in the hard way after reading this book. The Entitlement Cure
