You’ll Get Through This

Sharing is caring!

It’s no secret that I’m going through a very hard time. There are days I’m not sure I will get through it. I know, in my head, that God’s got this. But, my heart? It often begs to differ. I wonder if this shattered life, shattered heart will ever feel whole and safe again? Seriously, how do you recover from something like this? Worse, how do children come out whole after it?

In the middle of the worst heartbreak, I get the email that Max Lucado’s new book You’ll Get Through This: Hope and Help for your Turbulent Times is coming to me for review. It’s funny how God’s timing is perfect. In the current storm of life it was like the tiniest whisper “I’m here, I see you.” And then I started reading…You'll Get Through This by Max Lucado Review + $25 Giveaway

It felt like Max Lucado wrote every single word for me. There will be no loaning this book out to friends. I doubt anyone else could read it- every page is marked up with underlines, notes in the margins, exclamation points and tear stains. The very first paragraph spoke straight to my heart.

“You’ll get through this. It won’t be painless. It won’t be quick. But God will use this mess for good. In the meantime don’t be foolish or naive. But don’t despair either. With God’s help you will get through this.”

The book chronicles Joseph’s life- following along as time after time he walks through unthinkable hardships, yet he survived…better yet he thrived! From a pit to the top of a rich man’s home, from jail to 2nd in command in Egypt, from losing his family to saving them. God used every single mess in Joseph’s life to bring about good things-great things!

Max Lucado points out that God redeemed Joseph’s pain. Wow… that is huge. All the horrible in Joseph’s life culminated in amazing things. Without the betrayal of his brothers, and the unjust accusation of Potifar’s wife, his family and all of Egypt may have starved in 7 years of famine! What redemption might God have planned for this mess I find myself plunged into?

This book also reminds me that forgiveness isn’t once and done. The important thing is daily, weekly, hourly, trying to forgive so that bitterness doesn’t set in. This is something I struggle with- having a handle on it one moment, and then something, like the raw pain of a devastated child, bringing all the anger back often, even stronger than before.

It seems that Joseph struggled to forgive his brothers, based on his reactions after they came to Egypt all those years later. After all the brothers did to him, the rough path they set his life on, of course he struggled!

Max Lucado says, “forgiving jerks is the hardest trick in the bag.” But, I have to try, over and over again. “Forgiveness doesn’t diminish justice; it just entrusts it to God.” Forgiveness doesn’t mean the person who hurt me gets off scott free. It just means I’m trusting God to deal with it and moving on with my life so God can redeem this mess!

Is my heart still broken? Yes! Do I have hope? YES!

God will redeem this mess!

And this book sounds like something I need to read!!

  2. What perfect timing! God is funny that way — just when you think there is no more rope to hold, he offers a hand (or a book). I am so sorry for this tough time but I like that quote. It won’t be quick or easy but you will get through this.

We are currently separated and I pray that God open his eyes and bring him back to his family. He is also a believer and finances and other things became to much.

  10. Please pray for my brother. His wife just left him after 27 years of marriage. She stated the reason was because they grew apart. My brother’s health is not good and this definitely puts more stress on his heart. Our father died at the age of 51 from a massive heart attack. I fear the same now for my brother (who is 52 years old).

I would love for your prayers for our finances and the stress that comes with them, for my brothers finances as well, also for the health of my Dad, my Mom, my MIL, my cousin, and 3 dear friends that are facing health issues right now. Lastly I would love for your prayers for all of the shelter dogs and cats around the country, that they find forever homes and families that will love them, care for them and spoil them as they deserve for all of their days. Thank you!
