Not Back to School Week

Sharing is caring!

Last week, most of the local children found themselves heading back to school.  Our family had a very relaxed school week completing week four of this year’s curriculum.

**I feel like I need to start this post with a disclaimer- homeschooling is not always rainbows and sunshine.  There are plenty of days when the kids don’t want to cooperate, when 24/7 parenting is hard, and when my house is filthy.  In fact half of Sunday, this week, was spent frantically cleaning due to homeschooling and last week’s adventures keeping me from even the day-to-day upkeep of my home- and even then I didn’t get everything done that  I needed to finish before jumping back into school Monday morning.**

Now, back to our Not Back to School Week!  It was one of those weeks, when I am reminded how thankful I am that we are a homeschooling family with the flexible schedule homeschooling brings.

Rob had the first half of the week as his days off, and I was reminded  just how little he would see the children if they went to regular school.  Never having a full weekend off, plus working the night shift makes for a crazy schedule. Thanks to homeschooling, we still get to have a lot of family time despite his unconventional schedule.  Monday morning he got up early to start smoking barbecue for our dinner.

Most of the kids and I slept in, and then we made a late breakfast of chocolate chip pancakes.  After mixing a triple batch of batter I realized that we were out of syrup, and Rob saved the day by running to the store for us.  We didn’t start school work until almost lunch time that day!  Since Rob was outside cooking and the weather was nice and cool we moved school out to the porch for the day.

Front Yard Fun

Another day we had beautiful cool weather, so we spent much of the afternoon outside in the front yard. The kids made traffic signs and set them up using sticks and branches around the driveway and sidewalk.  They even took turns playing police officer, directing traffic and even giving out tickets.

We spent a day at the science museum with another homeschooling family; building friendships and learning about science through observation and hands on fun.

One night we stayed up late to make S’Mores in our chiminea and the kids went to bed exhausted but happy, smelling like fire and with sticky faces.

We all loaded up and went to the park for Michael’s football practice too!

I love Peyton’s face in this next photo- it is so her, always full of drama and telling a story!

On Friday, after doing school early in the morning, we all went to a lawyer’s office and sold our old house!  Yay! Finally!  And then had a fun lunch at a restaurant with Rob’s sister, who is our realtor.

So, it was an eventful and wonderful week, and this week promises to be even more eventful looking at our calendar with parties, sports, classes, and playdates galore.  I am so thankful for homeschooling!
