What if I don’t want to bake my bread in a bread machine?

I often prefer to use the dough setting on my bread machine and then bake my bread in the oven.

I like the size of a 9×5 loaf pan better than the bread maker loaf size. It’s all about personal preference.

If you’d like to bake your bread in the oven, this is my favorite dairy free bread recipe that doesn’t require baking in the bread maker.

Ingredients

  • 1 cups water
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 3 cups flour
  • 2 teaspoons yeast

Instructions

  1. Add water, salt, honey and oil to the bread maker basket.
  2. Pour flour into the bread maker, making a hill of flour.
  3. Use the back of the measuring cup, or a spoon to make a little well in the top of the flour
  4. Pour yeast into the well of the flour.
  5. Turn bread machine on to the 2lb white bread cycle, choosing your prefered color of crust (I choose medium)
  6. Allow the bread maker to begin mixing, about 10 minutes later check the ball of dough. Adding a little flour if it's too wet, or a water if it's too dry. (1 tablespoon at a time)
  7. Allow the bread machine to do it's thing
  8. Enjoy!

Notes

*if your bread machine instructions give a specific order of ingredients to put in your machine, follow those instructions. These directions are based on what my bread machine instruction manual instructs.

*you can substitute your favorite cooking oil for the olive oil.

*use bread flour if possible, but all purpose works fine too.

  1. Tried this today having friends over for dairy free dinner. This was better than my usual bread machine recipe. Came out perfect and really tasty. This is my new favorite!

    1. I’m so glad that you loved it as much as my family does! Even though I’m no longer dairy free, this is still my go to bread. It tastes better than my ‘regular’ recipe too!

    2. I’m so glad that you loved it as much as my family does! Even though I’m no longer dairy free, this is still my go to bread. It tastes better than my ‘regular’ recipe too!

  2. Love this bread so much. I came across it when I went DF breastfeeding my son and it was the first recipe I came across and I haven’t looked back. Now that we have ventured into the world of solids though, I’m thinking ahead to feeding this bread to my son but he can’t have honey until he’s over a year. Have you had any successful substitutions for honey?

    1. I’m so glad you love this recipe! I’ve also been baking it since I went dairy free to breastfeed my now 8 year old son and have never looked back, even though I am no longer dairy free. I have never tried to substitute anything for the honey- but my first try would be light corn syrup instead of honey. If you give it a try, I’d love to hear how it goes!

  3. Can gluten free flour be used instead?
Trying to find a good egg dairy soy and wheat free recipe for my son.
    Thanks

    1. I would not recommend using gluten free flour in this recipe, when I tested it the results were terrible. Bread hard as a rock! You’ll need a specific gluten free recipe. My gluten free friends all recommended buying a gluten free bread mix as the best way to make homemade bread gluten free.

    1. I don’t think you can omit the honey without making some changes to the other ingredients. I’ve never experimented with that. I’d think you’d need some sugar and possibly more wet ingredients, such as extra oil to make it work. Some readers have commented that they’ve switched the honey to maple syrup successfully. If you try it out I’d love to hear how it goes!

    1. Unfortunately, I had no luck when trying gluten free flour with this recipe. I would not recommend it. When I need gluten free I resort to a bread machine gluten free box mix.

    1. Hi Jen, I’m sorry it didn’t turn out quite right for you. My first though would be an issue with your yeast. I would test it and make sure it isn’t dead.

  4. Hi! I came across this recipe and I was going to make it for a friend. But I am not sure what kind of yeast do you use? Is it rapid yeast?

  5. This is the first recipe I’ve ever done in the bread maker, and it turned out amazing! Like you were, I’m also dairy-free/soy-free/everything-free for my breastfed baby, so I was searching for a bread I can eat. My husband couldn’t believe it was dairy free, and my 3 year old also loved it! This will be my go-to bread from here on out. Thank you!
Also, if you’ve experimented with any wheat-free & rice-free breads, I’d love a recipe. I’ve been searching high and low for a dairy, soy, wheat & rice-free bread for my little guy 🙁

    1. I’m so glad this recipe worked well for you! I know how hard it can be to feed yourself when your breastfed baby is so sensitive to what you eat! Unfortunately, I don’t have any wheat free bread recipes. When I tried gluten free breads I had so much trouble. I ended up using box mixes for gluten free breads in my bread maker.

  6. My husband has a terrible dairy allergy and I’ve recently gotten into bread making, as my Christmas gift was a bread maker. So many basic sandwich bread recipes require milk, so I started getting discouraged, but THIS. THIS BREAD. Holy cow!! It’s amazing. My new go-to. So soft on the inside, it’s PERFECT. I ended up needing an extra tablespoon of water during my kneading process, but it was easy to decipher and my bread came out so so so good!! Thank you!!

  7. I added 3 tsp rosemary powder and 2 tsp garlic powder and it came out amazing. Has a fantastic crust and truly makes the best toast! Thank you!

    1. You can change up to half of the white flour to wheat flour for a whole wheat loaf. I’ve never tried using all whole wheat flour in this recipe, but using half whole wheat and half white flour works very well.

  8. Have you been able to successfully make this in a breadmaker using the timer function? I’ve had two successful loaves, two duds, then one successful. Trying to figure out why. One dud was when I tried to use the timer function to have fresh bread in the morning.

    1. My breadmaker doesn’t have a timer function, so I haven’t tested it myself. Are you sure you are keeping the yeast away from the salt and liquid when you place the ingredients in the machine? It could be that the yeast is reacting prematurely or getting neutralized before the loaf really needs to rise.

  9. Any idea on how long I would bake this in the oven? I want to try mixing in the bread machine but baking in the oven!

  10. Great recipe! I will warn that it sometimes expands and pushes up on the lid of my 2LB capacity bread maker. However… the bread is so lovely that I don’t complain! I used to make a white bread full of milk and butter and I actually prefer this one. I’m not dairy free- I just happened to come across this recipe when I realized I ran out of milk, lol! 10/10 recommend. Light and fluffy, great crust. I’ve made it with half whole wheat flour and it also turned out great. I’ve used the timer and it turned out great (make sure yeast isn’t touching salt or honey). I’ve made this recipe weekly for a long time and haven’t found anything better or easier yet!
