Amity came from a very bad situation, when we got her she was a tiny, filthy, and frightened puppy. Amity would rarely let her guard down enough to play with an adult, and she startled at sudden movements or loud noises. Between the (likely) violent nature of her past and her extreme timidness, we worried about bringing her into a home full of children. But in the end, she needed to be rescued and she was adorable!
It also happened to be the week of Rebekah’s 10th birthday, so Amity became her birthday present. While Amity was nervous around adults, she immediately made the children her pack. Suddenly this cautious and slow-moving pup was racing around the room, chasing toys, and skidding across the floor.
I had no idea the effect having a puppy would have on Rebekah. She’s my quiet one- rarely sharing her emotions, preferring to deal with things alone. Amity is her safe space, her silent confidant.
Through a rough year Amity’s unconditional love remains Rebekah’s constant.
As a Mom, I find the best way to get through the tough stuff is throw myself into caring for the needs of my children. I think the same is true for everyone. Concentrating on others keeps us from dwelling on our own woes. The responsibility of caring for a pet does the same thing for a child.
Sweet Amity still shows signs of the abuse she suffered as a tiny puppy- cowering as new people approach and easily frightened. Just as my sweet Rebekah is still showing signs of the rough road she’s traveled this year. The two of them heal each other- and it’s a beautiful thing to watch.
Caring for dogs in need is very important to our family, especially since adopting Amity. That’s why I love PEDIGREE®. Throughout the entire month of October, the PEDIGREE® brand will donate a bowl of food to a dog in need for every PEDIGREE® product purchased at Sam’s Club. Plus, if you upload a photo of the dog you love to Instagram or Twitter using the hashtag #LaterShelter the PEDIGREE® brand will also donate a bowl of food for every upload!
