It’s that time of the year again, when cold, wet weather and countless hours cooped up inside result in sick children. With spring still months away, sickness will hit- it’s inevitable!

My family succumbed to our first winter sickness the week before Christmas. Sick during the holidays is no fun, especially when passing a sickness through a family our size means those germs stay awhile!  Today I’m sharing my tips for dealing when sick gets real this winter.

How to Deal when Sick Gets Real

Prepare for the inevitable sickness before it hits.

As a single Mom, I’ve learned that preparedness is my best weapon when sickness hits. The last thing I want is to take sick children to the store to gather medicine. Keep a basket of sick day supplies on hand. Keep a basket stocked with medications, soup, and your child’s favorite juice.

Prevent the germs from spreading.

Encourage everyone in the house to wash hands more often. Try to keep sick children away from well children. Use hand sanitizer liberally.

Treat the symptoms.

When your child feels miserable treat the symptoms with Children’s Advil®, Children’s Robitussin® and Children’s Dimetapp®.

  • Children’s Advil® – for children ages 2 to 11. Ease aches and pains while reducing a fever fast.
  • Children’s Robitussin® Extended-Release 12 Hour Cough Relief – for children ages 6 and up. Control and relieve symptoms all day (or night) long with this great-tasting medicine in your child’s favorite flavor. Flavor choices include Sugar-free Dye-free Berry, Bubble Gum, Grape, Blue Raspberry, Fruit and Dye-Free White Grape flavors.
  • Children’s Dimetapp® Multi-Symptom Cold Relief Dye-Free – for children ages 6 and up. Ease your child’s stuffy and runny nose, while also controlling a cough.

Encourage rest and recovery.

Sick days are the perfect time to binge watch favorite cartoons, cuddle up to read a chapter book aloud, enjoy coloring books. Rotate restful activities to keep your child resting for quick recovery.

  1. When the kids get sick they get plenty of rest and lots of fluids and take medicine. They usually spend the time resting and watching t.v. I like to cuddle with them and read them books.

  2. I go back to bed, drink plenty of tea with honey and lemon, eat chicken noodle soup and take cold medicine to help me sleep. I also have my kids stay in bed and give them plenty of liquids and good cold medicine with chicken noodle soup.

  3. I am pretty good at dealing with the sick ones in my house. Everyone always seems to get sick at the same time so I give medicine, take temperatures, and coddle everyone until they are better.

  4. Way too often I just pretend I’m not sick because I’m a mom so let’s face it I don’t have time to get sick! I also usually drink tons of honey and lemon water and take tons of medicine – both really hep me fake it until I’m better! 😉

  5. I start with chicken soup topped with red chili flakes, drink lots of fluids and honey lemon. I sort to OTC medicine when these don’t work.

  6. When I’m sick although it’s hard I try to rest, stay hydrated and take medicine if needed. With the kids I make sure they stay in bed, give them their medicine, plenty of juice, and call a doctor if it lasts more than a couple of days. It’s my husband who’s the baby though when he’s sick!

  7. I’m getting over a cold now, I fought it with Emergen C Raspberry drink in the morning and at night Emergen C hot apple cider drink. The cold lasted a week.

  8. When sick gets real I start diffusing my essential oils. They seem to really help. I also will make homemade soup. It’s comfort food.

  9. I’m actually sick right now. As a mom of four I try my best to rest, but that doesn’t always happen. Plenty of fluids as well.

  10. I just dose up on my cold meds and power on through because planning for a substitute is nearly impossible.

  11. When my daughter gets really sick, I make homemade chicken noodle soup. Get the baby Vicks on her feet and also sit in a steamy shower to get her feeling better and get that ickiness out

  12. Being sick in our home means I am busy running around and taking care of everyone at once because everyone gets sick at the same time. I give them lots of fluids and make sure they rest.

  13. Lots of warm blankets, fuzzy socks and plenty of orange juice blended with fresh strawberries!
    And a book. 🙂

  14. I do honey and lemon in tea. But i also do a tablespoon of honey which helps with my cough usually. I also love mucinex. It works so well.

  15. usually make chicken soup , stock up on medicine and make sure i lay and keep a eye on the kids when they get really sick ..anything to make them more comfortable works for me

  16. Me personally I just try to suck it up and go with the flow. My kids just kinda lay around and watch tv, sometimes they play minecraft too. So basically it’s not that much different from normal life! haha!

  17. Orange Juice, lots of fluids, soup or hot apple juice with honey & lemon. I also make them sleep as much as possible.

  19. Sanitize, wash hands frequently, get rest and consume plenty of vitamin C. Eat some chicken noodle soup with crackers.

  20. When sick gets real, the kids get the couch with the tv and humidifier. They also get the soup and the ice pops along with a nice pillow and blanket. Mom gets the lysol wipes and wipes down every light switch, door handle, and remote or phone in the house. Often, the motrin accompanies the day.

  21. I get plenty of rest, drink fluids, eat soup and whine…LOL Now when hubby gets sick it is major…lol I have to baby him and trust me he goes beyond whining…LOL
