Pretzels take 2

Sharing is caring!

Ever since our flopped batch of pretzels last week I cannot stop thinking about eating yummy mall soft pretzels.  So, when we finished school early it seemed the perfect day to try a soft pretzel recipe from Pinterest.  I threw the dough ingredients into the bread maker and let it do its thing as I cleaned up breakfast dishes and fixed our lunch.

After lunch, I hoped to put Emily down for nap so that the big kids and I could shape our pretzels, but not surprisingly Emily didn’t agree with the plan.  Eventually, I gave up on the nap, put her in the high chair with a bowl of cottage cheese and started the big kids on pretzel making.  Shaping pretzels was so much fun, we had traditional pretzels, initials (lots of Ps for Peyton), hearts and knots.

While they weren’t nearly as pretty as the photos on pinterest they tasted great!  The recipe is definitely a keeper and one that we will make again–the kids are already asking when they can make another batch.

I imagine this will be a perfect rainy day cooking activity; it was much less work and mess than making and decorating cookies or cupcakes.  Next time, I plan to warm up some nacho cheese for pretzel dipping!

Emily finally decides to take a nap.

 Bread Maker Soft Pretzels

(inspired by this Pretzel Nugget recipe)

Place the following ingredients in the bread maker and run the dough cycle:

1 1/2 cups of warm water

1 teaspoon of salt

2 tablespoons of sugar

2 cups white flour

2 cups white whole wheat flour

2 heaping teaspoons of yeast

When the dough cycle finishes divide dough into 12 pieces on a floured board.  Shape pieces as desired.

Mix together 2 cups of warm water and 1/4 cup baking soda.  Dip shaped pretzels into this mixture then place on a greased baking sheet and sprinkle the pretzels with kosher salt.  Bake pretzels in a 425 degree oven for about 8 minutes.  Remove from oven and brush with melted butter.
