How to make a Narwhal Felt Ornament

List of Supplies:

  • Colored felt fabrics
  • Marker or Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Needle
  • Matching thread
  • Cotton batting or scrap felt
  • Template

Instructions:

Download and print out the narwhal ornament template. Cut out the pattern pieces.

Select colored felt fabrics for the narwhal pattern.

Trace the template patterns on the selected felts and cut them out using a pair of scissors.

Take one of the narwhal base cutouts and place the 2 blush cutouts on the narwhal. See below for placement.

Prepare needle with thread that matches the blush cutouts.

Stitch the blush cutouts on the cheek by stitching around the border of the cheek.

Place the belly cutout on the bottom edge of the base and stitch along the top edge of it to connect it to the base.

Keep the bottom edge open for now.

Use black thread to stitch the eyes and mouth onto the felt narwhal.

Place the other base on a flat surface and then place the tusk on the top edge of the head.

Place the front narwhal base on the top of the plain base, keeping the tusk between the base layers.

Now, place the other tusk cutout on the top of the front layer, right on top of the 1st tusk cutout.

Prepare a needle with thread matching the tusk.

Stitch around the edge of the tusk to join them together.

After stitching around the open edge of the tusk cutouts, stitch the bottom part of the top tusk to the top layer. Do not stitch the bottom edge through the back Narwhal pass.

Prepare a needle with thread that matches the narwhal base.

Work running stitches to join the base pieces around the edges, leaving a small opening for stuffing.

You can stuff the narwhal with scrap felt or cotton batting through a small opening and then close the opening with running stitches. (Or you can leave the narwhal unstuffed if you prefer.)

Cut a piece of ribbon and make a loop with it by joining the open ends.

Attach the ribbon loop on the back of the felt narwhal pattern to make the ornament.
