Build a Better Breakfast with a DIY Breakfast Station
My early bird nature flew right out the window when I became a Mom. Sleepless nights with babies, long nights with toddlers, bad dreams, accidents, staying up late to finish work or chores… a good night’s sleep is a thing of the past.
My children hit the ground hungry and LOUD, while I hit the ground at a snail’s pace wishing for ear plugs and mute buttons. I’m shuffling to the kitchen, eyes barely open, wishing the coffee fairy would arrive with a fresh cup of perfectly sweetened coffee, as they skip and jump ahead of me.
The chirps start before I get to the kitchen, “Mom is it breakfast time?” “Mommy I’m hungry.” “Can I have a cookie?” “What do we have for breakfast?” While I’m muttering, “just let me get my coffee started!”
This month I decided that breakfast must become more self-serve in our house! I grabbed this cute tiered server and made it a Self-Serve DIY Breakfast Station. Each night before bed, I fill it with breakfast choices.
No more making 6 different breakfasts, or arguing over what breakfast choices are acceptable, filling, and healthy. This Breakfast Station makes it easy for the children to start the day off on the right foot with a healthy breakfast, while keeping it easy for Mom.
Now when those chirps start, I just point at the DIY Breakfast Station, while filling my coffee pot.
Self-Serve DIY Breakfast Station
To create your own self-serve DIY Breakfast Station, simply grab a tiered tray and fill the bottom tier with glasses.
Use a chalkboard sign to remind children what beverage(s) they can choose, and where those beverages are located. Milk is the beverage of choice for breakfast at our house, since milk’s 9 essential nutrients help to ensure that kids have the potential to play, learn and grow. With 8 grams of high-quality protein per 8 ounce serving, I know my children are starting the day off on the right foot.
On the top tier of the Breakfast Station add fruit or fruit cup. I like using Del Monte Fruit & Veggie Fusions, with 1 serving of fruits and veggies in each cup, on this tier. Your kids won’t realize they are eating veggies for breakfast, since the juice is the vegetable!
On the second tier add an easy, filling breakfast choice such as Lender’s Bagels since they are filling and sustain kids all the way to lunch time. With 3 flavors – plain, blueberry and cinnamon-raisin, there are flavors for the whole family. Bagels are my go to for a time saving, easy, tasty, and nutritious breakfast.
Also place any spreads your family will enjoy on this layer. I often add peanut butter, and cocoa almond butter.
Add the finishing touches.
- A chalkboard sign with directions
- straws and utensils
- spreads for the bagels
Such a great way to make breakfast time run smooth AND get my coffee in peace! Why didn’t I think of this 5 years ago!?
Head to Walmart for all the supplies needed for a DIY Breakfast Station. Don’t forget to look for coupons for both Del Monte and Lender’s products on specially marked Del Monte Fruit & Veggie Fusions packages. You’ll find Lender’s Bagels in the refrigerated dairy section.
Many children still face hunger, but The Great American Milk Drive is working to fight childhood hunger. When children face hunger they are missing the nutrients that give them energy. They may miss playing, learning and growing due to that lack of nutrients. Join Feeding America in The Great American Milk Drive to help bring milk to the hungry children and families who need it most. Over 14 million servings of milk have already been delivered to food banks through this first-of-its-kind initiative!
Now, you can help feed a childhood – by purchasing 1 or more of these products, you are helping Feeding America provide nutrient- rich milk to kids and families in need. Visit milklife.com/give to learn more.
