How to Make Flower Candy Dome Holders from Clear Ornaments
In this tutorial, we’ll guide you through the steps to make these beautiful candy holders using clear Christmas ornaments and our free printable templates. The instructions are easy to follow, making this craft perfect for both beginners and seasoned DIYers. You’ll learn how to create a flower and sunflower design, but the possibilities for customization are endless!
Supplies:
- Yellow cardstock
- Glitter cardstock (optional)
- 60mm split craft ornaments
- Paper fastener
- Paper drinking straw
- 3/8-inch green ribbon
- Craft wiggle eyes (1/2 inch)
- Permanent marker
- Hot glue gun and glue
- Pencil and scissors
- Printed patterns
- Candy to fill the dispenser
Instructions:
First download the flower pattern you’ll need for the flower dome candy holders. You’ll find the sunflower pattern options for the candy holders in the FAQ list towards the end of this post. Also included in the optional bouquet holder pattern and directions.
Print the pattern out onto yellow cardstock.
Cut out the pattern pieces. If you are using a lightweight cardstock (65lbs or less) you can cut two copies of pattern piece #1, and glue them together to add strength. Punch a hole in the center of pieces #1 and #2.
If you are using glitter cardstock to make the petals of the flower, use pattern piece #4 as a stencil, and draw around it on the back side of the glitter cardstock. Cut the petal-shaped piece out of the glitter cardstock.
Connect pattern pieces #1 and #2 using a paper fastener.
Use a small piece of tape to secure the ‘arms’ of the paper faster in place, to stop them from moving.
To cover the paper fastener, glue piece #3 on top, taking care to align the pieces with each other and not cover the dispenser hole.
Use hot glue to attach the plastic half-dome ornament onto the cardstock dispenser mechanism.
Cut a paper straw in half and use hot glue to attach it to the ‘hanging loop’ of the plastic ornament. Use enough glue so that you have a good connection between the two pieces, as this will support the final weight of your flower.
Cut a 4-inch piece of ribbon (angle the ends of the ribbon cuts if desired), and fold it slightly as shown, to create the two leaves. Use hot glue to secure it to the top of the straw ‘stem’.
Use hot glue to attach the bottom of the flower petal piece onto the ribbon leaves.
Then use hot glue to attach the top of the flower petal piece to the top of the ornament dispenser. The flower petal piece will sit at a slight angle with respect to the dispenser mechanism because of the straw.
Create a face, if desired, using hot glue to attach the eyes and a permanent marker to draw a mouth.
Turn the ornament over, fill it with candy, and close the dispenser.
Your flower is finished!
