How to Customize your Gnome Ornament

  1. Different Color Beards and Hats: Play around with yarn in various shades, such as red, white, or even silver for a magical winter gnome. You can also make the hats in a range of colors to match your Christmas theme or the recipient’s favorite color.
  2. Add Glitter or Sequins: For extra sparkle, glue a few glittery accents to the gnome’s hat or beard. Sequins can add a festive touch, especially for a New Year’s Eve ornament.
  3. Make a Garland: Create many of these gnome ornaments, then stream them together for a fun gnome Christmas garland
  4. Seasonal Variations: Mix it up for other holidays! Change the hat to a Santa-style cap for Christmas, a shamrock for St. Patrick’s Day, or a witch’s hat for Halloween. You can easily create gnomes for every occasion!

These custom touches will make your gnome ornament unique and add that personal flair that makes handmade crafts so special!

How to Make a Yarn and Felt Gnome Ornament for Christmas

Supplies:

  • Felt
  • Cardstock paper
  • Pencil or fabric marker
  • Yarn
  • Hot glue
  • Half round bead
  • Scissors
  • Craft glue

Instructions:

Download and print out the gnome template. Cut out the pattern pieces.

Select felt fabrics for the gnome’s hat patterns, a round half bead for the nose and yarn for the beard.

Fold in any one side of the square felt cutout along the diagonal middle line.

Fold the adjacent side of the square and overlap the previously folded side. Apply glue along the overlapped sides to join them. The cone hat of the gnome is complete.

Attach the felt leaf cutouts to the felt hat.

Attach the felt cherry cutout to the hat, overlapping the felt leaves.

Take a piece of cardstock (3” x 5”) and a bundle of yarn for the beard.

Wrap the short side of the cardstock with the yarn as much as you want for the beard part.

Happy with the wrapped yarn’s volume? Cut out a small piece of yarn and insert it through the top end of the wrapped yarn loop.

Tie a tight and secured knot with both ends of the inserted yarn.

Take out the wrapped yarn from the cardstock and cut the opposite end of the tied part.

Select a half-round bead for the nose.

Use hot glue to attach the tied end of the yarn slightly inside the felt hat.

Attach the bead nose to the bottom edge of the felt hat.

Make a loop with a string and attach it to the back of the gnome to complete the ornament.

Tips and Tricks for Crafting Your DIY Gnome Ornament

  1. Use hot glue carefully: Hot glue works best for securing yarn and felt, but be cautious, as it can burn your fingers. Use a low-temp glue gun if crafting with kids, or consider using craft glue for safer handling.
  2. Trim the yarn evenly: When cutting the yarn for the gnome’s beard or hair, try to keep it even. If you want a fuller beard, you can add extra layers of yarn. After gluing, gently trim the ends for a neat, polished look.
  3. Add extra support to the base: To ensure your gnome stands securely, you can add a small circle of cardboard or felt at the bottom of the ornament, or even stuff the gnome’s body lightly with cotton batting for added stability.
  4. Secure the loop carefully: If you plan to hang your gnome on the tree, make sure to secure a small piece of ribbon or string at the top of the ornament with glue. Test the loop before letting it dry to ensure it can hold the weight of the ornament.
  5. Make it a family activity: If crafting with kids, pre-cut the felt and yarn into smaller pieces to save time and avoid frustration. Let the kids choose their own colors to make each gnome unique!
