New Games from Blue Orange – Dr. Eureka and Fast Flip
Blue Orange Games are always on my family’s list of favorites- from preschoolers all the way to Mom. We had the opportunity to review two games, Dr. Eureka and Fast Flip, from the new 2016 Blue Orange Line up last month.
Spoiler- both games belong on our list of favorites. That didn’t surprise me at all considering all the wonderful quality games we already love from Blue Orange. Read on to learn more about the new games and enter to win your own set at the end of this post!
Dr. Eureka
In Dr. Eureka race to move colorful balls from test tube to test tube without dropping or touching the balls, and be the first to place your balls in the position illustrated on the challenge card.
This game comes with 12 test tubes, 24 colored balls, 54 challenge cards and an illustrated rules booklet. Kids have so much fun playing this game that they don’t even realize they are practicing problem solving skills, fine motor skills, visual perception, focus and attention, and processing speed.
The game is recommended for ages 8 and up. It can be played alone or with up to 4 players. My preteens often play this game alone, hoping to build speed so they can win the next time we play as a family!
The rules are simple. Set 3 test tubes with two balls each in front of each player. Flip a challenge card face up from the stack and race to copy the combination and order shown on the card and shout “Eureka!” when you complete the card. The first player to win 5 Challenge Cards wins the game.
One thing I really appreciate about this game is its speed- we easily play a round in less than 20 minutes. An hour of play means several different winners for the evening, which makes my crew happy.
Fast Flip
A game where kids are encouraged to play with their food! This game is not your average matching game, that’s for sure.
It is recommended for ages 7 and up, and is played with 2-8 players. The cute little tin contains 54 cards, 10 tokens, and illustrated directions.
Each card has a series of fruits on the front and either a number or a single fruit on the back. During each round, one card is flipped face-up from the stack. The face-up card will show either a number or a fruit. Players race to identify which fruit is shown the same number of times as the number printed on the card, or to identify how many times the fruit printed on the face-up card is shown on the other card.
For example:
The game has 3 variations. We play two of the variations frequently.
Variation 1
Game play using the tokens. Players race to grab the token that shows the correct answer. Players can even steal tokens from in front of another player, who grabbed the token during a different round. The first player with 4 tokens wins the game. This variation is our favorite, we love racing to grab the tokens before the other players!
Variation 2
Game play without tokens. The first person to call out the answer wins and keeps the face up card. Play until only one card is left in the deck. The player with most cards wins. This variation is loud, but it works really well for playing in small spaces when there isn’t room for tokens and grabbing.
I love the compact size of this game. It is perfect for throwing in a suitcase for a rainy vacation day, while being quick to learn and fun for a large variety of ages.
