Age Well: How to Help Your Loved Ones Live Their Best Lives

Sharing is caring!

This summer I shared how living with my Grandmother has been such a blessing along with the importance of helping ensure that she stays healthy in this stage of her life.

My grandma is surely a great example of aging well, and I have the advantage of observing firsthand what it takes to grow old with grace! Today, I’d like to share some of the things I’ve learned watching her age well over the years.

Be Active

My Grandma believes that staying active is an important way to age well. Well into her eighties you’d find her in the yard, playing with the children- even if it meant holding a cane in one hand.

At 91 years old she walks around our large country yard and to the mailbox nearly every day.

Even when she’s feeling aches and pains, she washes dishes and completes other chores. She often reminds me, when I offer to take over, that keeping busy and active is essential for her health.

Staying active doesn’t stop at her body. Grandma is also very conscious about keeping her brain active. She spends many hours completing puzzles, playing games, reading, and working through puzzle books.

Take a lesson from my Grandma and help your loved ones age well by staying active. If necessary you can rely on Medicare Advantage plans from Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, which give enrollees a choices of many wellness services, such as help with daily activities through personal home helpers.

Be Healthy

Placing a priority on health is important. So many older women, like my Grandma, spent their whole lives taking care of everyone else. It has never occurred to them to prioritize their own health and well-being.

We must emphasize the importance of prioritizing personal health, especially into old age. We want to keep these amazing loved ones around for as long as possible, and that means reminding them that it’s time to take care of their own health and well-being. I love that my Grandma will now ask me to pick up her medications rather than letting them run out or trying to drive to the pharmacy alone.

Ensuring that your aging loved one stays healthy can involve choosing the right Medicare plan. You can choose a plan that offers the services that are most important to your loved one. I’m learning that Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield strives to improve consumers’ health and well-being by providing high-quality, affordable healthcare services through their Medicare Advantage plans.

Eating well is a first step toward being healthy, however eating nutritious foods can be difficult for older adults who have difficulty getting to the store or preparing food. Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield gives enrollees a choices of nutrition support and education. Some of their Medicare Advantage plans give members access to healthy food delivery!

Being healthy also requires keeping up with regular doctor visits. Getting to the doctor can be another difficulty for our aging loved ones. Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield gives enrollees a choice of health-related transportation services through their Medicare Advantage plans that ensure your loved one can access the care she needs.

Foster Relationships and Community

Personal relationships and a sense of community are important to help our loved ones age well. Loneliness can be detrimental to an elderly person’s well-being.

My Grandma often says that the presence of my family keeps her young and well.

However, many times our aging loved ones live alone or far away from family. Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield’s Medicare Advantage plans also offers consumers a choice of services such as adult day center visits, which help combat loneliness when family is far away.

You can help your loved ones age well by ensuring that they stay active, prioritize their health, and engage themselves in community. Partnering with the right Medicare brand can make this task easier.

Consider Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield as an option for your loved one. Brand new services for Medicare Advantage in 2020 include nutrition support and education, service dog support, and pest control on top of the many services they already offer. Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield believes that addressing whole-person health through many options of wellness services can make aging well easier.
