- Use your favorite craft medium for the axolotl details, such as craft paper or craft foam.
- Instead of painting the egg, try dyeing it using your favorite Easter egg dying method. (find 15 fun Easter Egg dye methods here)
- Blow the yolk out of a real egg to create a hollow shell that’s lightweight and long-lasting.
- Use plastic Easter eggs instead of real ones for a more durable option.
- Choose a craft egg (in foam, wood, or paper mache) for your axolotl Easter egg.
- Make axolotls in blue, purple, or any color your kids love—who says they have to be pink?
- Add glitter or other embellishments to make your axolotls sparkle!

Make an Axolotl Easter Egg
Supplies:
- Egg
- Craft paint
- Paint brush
- Markers
- Toilet paper roll
- Felt
- Scissors
- Craft glue
- Printed template
Instructions:
Download and print out the pattern.
Select an egg and clean its outer surface.
If your egg is brown, apply a layer or 2 of white craft paint for the base coat. If your egg is already white, you can skip to the second step.
Allow the base coat to dry entirely.
*We used acrylic paint.
Now, select a shade of pink craft paint for the main coat. Apply the paint once, neatly and evenly. Allow the paint to dry entirely. Add a second coat if needed.
Cut about an inch off of the bottom of an empty toilet paper roll.
Cut a slit in the toilet paper roll.
Overlap the open edges to make the toilet paper roll smaller, so that the bottom end of the egg fits nicely in the opening. Glue or tape the open ends of the toilet paper roll in place.
Trace and cut out the water pattern from blue felt.
Cover the outer surface of the cardboard roll with the felt water. Glue the felt in place.
Trace and cut out the gills and the tail pieces.
Attach the gill cutouts on the top left and right side of the painted egg with glue.
Attach the tail cutout on the side of the egg, near the bottom.
Use a lighter shade of pink craft paint to make an oval shape toward the bottom edge of the egg.
*If you don’t have a lighter pink paint, simply mix some white paint into the pink paint you used for the axolotl’s body.
Use markers to draw a face on to the painted egg axolotl.
*We recommend using permanent markers. You could also use paint pens, or paint and a detail paint brush.
Place the egg axolotl in the felt covered egg stand to complete the axolotl Easter egg.
