How to Make a Yarn and Craft Stick Christmas Tree

Supplies:

  • Popsicle sticks
  • Cutting pliers
  • Yarn
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue
  • Star cutout

Instructions:

Take four popsicle sticks of the same size.

Place a popsicle stick horizontally on a flat surface.

Take another popsicle stick and glue its end (vertically) to the middle of the horizontal stick.

Next add two more sticks, as shown below, to make a triangle.

We’re using one strand each of two different shades of green yarn for this craft.

Hold the ends of the yarns together and glue them to the bottom edge of the triangle, as shown below.

Turn the tree over, so the yarn is on the backside. Bring the yarn up through the middle and over the center popsicle stick, then back behind the other side of the triangle.

Continue weaving over and under from side to side of the tree.

Weave over and under from side to side until the yarn reaches the top of the Christmas tree.

Cut off extra yarn after reaching the top and secure the ends with glue on the back of the ornament. Attach a star shape to the top of the tree.

Cut 3 even pieces from a popsicle stick and place them adjacent to each other, side by side. This will be the trunk of the tree.

Attach the trunk part to the bottom side of the tree base to complete the tree craft.

Make a small loop with a string or ribbon and attach it at the top of the Christmas tree, behind the star to complete the ornament.

Tips and Tricks

  • Prep Materials in Advance: Cut the yarn into manageable lengths and have the craft sticks pre-painted (if desired) for younger children to save time and minimize mess.
  • Secure the Yarn: Start by tying a small knot at one end of the yarn to prevent it from unraveling as kids work.
  • Use Glue Sparingly: If adding embellishments like beads or stars, use a quick-drying craft glue to keep the process smooth and frustration-free.
  • Work Over a Tray: For classroom or party settings, have kids work on trays or disposable plates to keep the mess contained.
  • Add a Hook: Attach a small loop of string or a metal ornament hook to the top for easy hanging.
