How to Make a DIY Pirate Spyglass

Supplies:

  • Recycled Paper Towel Tube
  • Paper Cup
  • Brown Craft Paint
  • Craft Glue
  • Paintbrush
  • Scissors
  • Natural Jute Twine
  • Rhinestones
  • Craft Paper – White & Black
  • Black Marker
  • Pencil
  • Printed Pattern

Instructions:

Paint the paper cup and paper towel tube with brown craft paint. Let dry and apply a second coat, if necessary.

Download, print and cut out the Pirate Spyglass Patterns.

Trace the stripe pattern three times onto black paper, and the skull pattern once onto white paper with a pencil.

*You could also use colored craft foam, construction paper, or craft felt for this project.

Cut out the pirate telescope patterns with scissors.

Attach the black stripes to the ends and center of the paper towel tube with glue.

TIP: We used a glue gun and glue sticks for this craft tutorial.
You can use liquid craft glue for this project, but you will have to wait for it to dry.
Alternately, for less mess you can use glue dots or double sided tape.

Attach sections of natural jute twine between the black stripes along the length of the telescope with glue.

Using a black marker, draw the outline around the skull and crossbones, then fill in the mouth, nose, and eyes of the skull.

Attach the skull and crossbones to the paper cup telescope with glue.

Glue the paper towel tube telescope base to the bottom of the paper cup.

*NOTE: to make the telescope viewable, cut the bottom out of the paper cup before attaching the paper towel tube.

Embellish the pirate telescope with self-adhesive silver rhinestones or silver beads.
