Tips and Tricks for Making this Paper Plate Mermaid Craft

Encourage kids to experiment with different shades of blue, teal, purple, and green to create a custom mermaid tail. Mixing paint colors or using ombre effects can make the tail look more magical and ocean-inspired.

Glitter glue adds instant sparkle and works beautifully to outline the scalloped edges of the tail scales. You can also add dots, swirls, or patterns to make each tail unique.

For extra embellishment, consider adding rhinestones, pearl stickers, sequins, or gems along the scales. These details help give the tail a glamorous, mermaid-worthy finish.

If you want more texture, try dry brushing a lighter color of paint over the base coat once it’s dry. This highlights the ridges of the paper plate and makes the scales stand out even more.

Let the paint fully dry before adding glitter glue or extra decorations. This helps prevent smudging and keeps the colors bright and defined.
