How to make a Clay Pot Turkey for Thanksgiving Decor

Materials:

  • 3.5” Clay Pot, 3.5”
  • 7 Jumbo Craft Sticks
  • Wiggle Eyes
  • Natural Jute Twine
  • Craft Felt – Brown, Burgundy, Gold
  • Craft Paint – Medium Brown, Dark Brown, Burgundy, Yellow, Gold, Bright Orange, Dark Orange, Pink
  • Glue Gun and Glue Sticks
  • Paintbrush
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • Pencil with new Eraser or Dot Paint Brush
  • Black Permanent Marker
  • Clay Pot Turkey Pattern

Instructions:

Paint the clay pot with medium brown acrylic craft paint. Let paint dry and apply a second coat, if necessary.

Next, paint the 7 jumbo craft sticks.

We painted two sticks burgundy, one yellow, one gold, one bright orange, one dark orange and one dark brown.

You can paint the sticks in any colors you’d like. You can also repeat colors more often if you have fewer colors of paint.

Let paint dry and apply a second coat, if necessary.

Measure and cut each jumbo craft stick in half with scissors.

Download, print, and cut out the clay pot turkey patterns. Trace the turkey feather base onto brown craft felt with a black marker. Cut out with scissors.

Brown craft foam would also work for this step.

Lay out the half jumbo craft sticks with seven on the bottom layer and six on the top layer.

Refer to the photo for placement.

Attach the half jumbo craft sticks to the felt base with a glue gun and glue sticks.

Add feather markings to each half craft stick using a black marker. This step could also be completed prior to gluing.

Attach the turkey feathers to the back of the turkey with a glue gun and glue sticks.

You could also use liquid craft glue, but you would have to wait for it to dry.

Trace the turkey beak onto gold craft felt, and the turkey waddle onto burgundy craft felt with a black marker.

Cut out the beak and waddle with scissors.

Add a face to the turkey by attaching two wiggle eyes with a glue gun and glue sticks.

Glue the felt waddle and beak directly under the wiggle eyes.

Add cheeks by dipping a new pencil eraser in pink acrylic craft paint and dotting on either side of the face. (you can use a dot paint brush instead)

Tie natural jute twine or ribbon in a bow, and glue to the base of the clay pot turkey.

Enjoy your Thanksgiving turkey clay pot!
