How to make a fall gnome with silk leaves

Supplies:

  • Foam Cone
  • Autumn Silk Leaves
  • Glue Gun and Glue Sticks (or your favorite craft adhesive)
  • 2″ wide Burlap Ribbon
  • Wooden Bead
  • Silk Sunflower
  • Black Gingham Ribbon
  • Wooden Dice
  • Acrylic Craft Paint in Muted Orange
  • Paintbrush
  • Scissors
  • Ruler

Instructions:

Gather all supplies. Measure and draw a circle around the foam cone at the 3.5” mark with a pencil.

(Our foam cone came from the Dollar Tree and is about 3inches by 7 inches in size. You can use any size you prefer for this craft. A taller cone will have a longer leaf beard.)

Measure 4” up from the tip of silk oak leaves, and cut in half horizontally with scissors. Repeat with 5 additional leaves.

Set the top of the leaves with the stems aside. Attach the bottom half of the silk leaves around the base of the foam cone with a glue gun and glue sticks.

**NOTE: You can use liquid craft glue for this project, but you will have to wait for it to dry.

Trim the tips from the remaining tops of the silk leaves. Fit these pieces in between, filling in all of the gaps. Secure in place with a glue gun and glue sticks.

Wrap the burlap ribbon around the gnome, gluing in the back and trimming excess ribbon with scissors.

Repeat with a second layer of burlap ribbon, leaving ½” excess at the top of the foam cone. Attach with a glue gun and glue sticks.

Attach the right and left sides of the excess burlap with a glue gun and glue sticks. Glue the top and bottom of the excess burlap to finish the top of the gnome’s hat.

Measure and cut an 8” length of burlap ribbon. Glue in half length-wise.

Starting at the back of the foam cone, attach the hat band to the bottom edge of the gnome’s hat with a glue gun and glue sticks.

Glue the band all the way around the bottom edge of the burlap hat.

Attach the wooden ball to the front center of the gnome with a glue gun and glue sticks. Make sure to tuck the nose under the hat band.

Gather the embellishments you’d like to use to decorate the gnome’s hat.
We used a small sunflower and a gingham ribbon.

Tie black gingham ribbon into a bow. Glue to the gnome’s hat and finish with a silk sunflower.

Basecoat one wooden dice with muted orange acrylic craft paint. Let dry, and apply a second coat, if necessary. To finish, attach the painted wooden dice to the bottom of the foam cone with a glue gun and glue sticks.

You can customize this Fall Leaf Gnome by using a variety of color of silk leaves for the Fall Leaf Gnome.
